Heroic Eastbourne bus drivers in snowstorm
Snow in Eastbourne March 11th 2013 E11019P
AN Eastbourne bus driver has thanked passers-by for helping him when his vehicle became stuck in the snow last night.
The unnamed Stagecoach driver was working route 1/1A when his bus became stuck at the top end of Green Street by the Tally-Ho pub shortly after 6pm last night.
The driver has contacted the Herald to thank folk who braved cold conditions to help him get his bus moving, particularly a nearby shopkeeper who helped grit the icy road.
He wrote: “I wish to thank all the local residents and passers-by for their grateful help and assistance, offers of assistance to myself at the time of becoming stuck on the snow-covered road with the bus I was driving.
“I am very grateful to the helpers that helped grit the road and the shop owner for his loan of facilities to enable this, as well as people who helped ensure other cars did not cause further problems.
“Many thanks to the police officer for his assistance, closing the road and to the residents for their kind offers of a warm drink.
“I am very heart-warmed that, at a time of need, there are many helpful persons ready to assist. Thank you.”
Meanwhile another Herald reader, Mandy Brown from Hailsham, has said she wanted to thank a kind bus driver who helped her when her car became stuck along Upperton Road in Eastbourne.
It took her three hours to make the usual 20 minute journey home from Eastbourne to Hailsham.
Mandy said: “I was trying to drive out of Eastbourne along Upperton Road and police were stopping the cars advising that only one car go up the hill at a time. They were telling you the best way to drive to try to get up the hill.
“As I approached the top of the hill my car got stuck on an icy part of the road and a very kind bus driver came and pushed my car up the remainder of the hill.
“I absolutely hate driving in these conditions and once the car got stuck I panicked. I
just wanted to say thank you through your paper to this very kind man for coming to help me out - without his help I wouldn’t have got home last night. A very big thank you.”
As an aside, Mandy criticised the lack of grit on the roads. She asked: “Where were the gritters and why were the roads left untreated when the snow had been forecast?”
