Here's way to get bikes checked

THOSE who get on bikes to go to work can have their cycles checked out for free tomorrow.

As part of both Green Transport Week and National Bike Week, free bicycle safety checks, including brake and gear setting and professional repair recommendations, are taking place outside the district council offices in Vicarage Lane, from 11am to 3pm.

Wealden District Council will be encouraging its own staff and councillors to bring their cycles to the Bike Doctor for a free check-up.

In addition, information on sustainable travel alternatives, including cycling, walking, car sharing and public transport will be available at the Travel Choice stand in the council's reception area.

Everyone who visits the Bike Doctor or Travel Choice stand will be entered into a free prize draw to win 50 worth of Marks and Spencer vouchers.

Councillor Pam Doodes, leader of Wealden District Council, said, "The aim of these events is to raise awareness of the alternatives to the car, many of which will not only reduce your carbon footprint but also save money and keep you fit."

The district council is providing a 'sustainable commuter' breakfast for its staff who travel to work by public transport, bicycle, lift-share or on foot, and councillors will be asked to leave their cars behind when travelling to meetings this week.
