Heavy storm causes chaos across town
Motorists in Seaford had to negotiate waterlogged roads and part of the town's library closed after torrential rain and heavy winds battered Sussex.
A tree came down in the Crouch area and one resident called to say the Newhaven transmitter had gone down, leaving terrestrial viewers with only a picture of Channel 4.
Refuse collections across the Lewes district were suspended on Monday and re-scheduled to take place yesterday due to the closure of the Beddingham Waste Disposal Site and concerns over crews operating in the storm conditions.
Areas between Beachy Head to Hastings and the Cuckmere River were put on Flood Watch, meaning flooding of low-lying land and roads is expected, but both were given the all clear by yesterday (Tuesday).
Roads were particularly bad in Seaford in the Marine Parade and Buckle area.
The bad weather caused the same section of the children's library to be closed for a second time this year.
One resident said sandbags protecting the entrance doors had been removed.
Danny Murray, one of the Friends of Seaford Library, said, "The torrential rain again poured under the 'new' (2004) automatic doors as before and compounded the earlier damage.
"Heavy rain, when blown under the doors into the entrance area, soaks through the flooring and pours down the walls onto the shelving below in the children's library.
"As a result, the whole basement area, housing both the reference library and the children's section are now closed to the public while the situation is assessed.
"I cannot mention again about 'good money being thrown after bad'.
"We desperately need a new library instead of all the patching up."
Jim Murray said he had been left without any terrestrial TV, apart from Channel 4, for 36 hours.
He said the opportunity should be taken now to get TV ready for the digital upgrade, which he said is not due to take place in the area until 2012.
Seahaven FM, which went on air earlier this month and whose station is based in Seaford, was at one point on Monday the only station on FM to air.
A spokesperson for East Sussex County Council, said, "Seaford Library has again been affected by the recent severe weather conditions and we are now urgently looking at what repairs need to be made.
"We would like to apologise to local library users for any inconvenience that this has caused."
