Head shave raises cash for local charity

editorial image

It was a case of hair today, gone tomorrow for three people who had their heads shaved to raise money for bereaved families.

Oliver Brooks, Harry Clarke and Tom Snell raised more than £1,000 for You Raise Me Up, the charity set up by Willingdon couple Jane and Fraser Brooks after their daughter Megan died suddenly in May 2011, the week before her 18th birthday.

Megan’s brother Oliver, Harry, whose brother Adam died the same year and young Tom had their heads shaved at Eastbourne Rugby Club in the run up to Christmas.

By the end of the evening their fundraising total was £1,100 which will go to the charity to cover the costs of funerals and provide support and care for the families of deceased teens.

While Ollie`s hair grows back slowly, he is not resting and has a further three events to plan.

After having to pull out of a bike ride he said he will return to where he left off to complete the South Downs Way cycle challenge.

The other two event planed are the Three Peaks Challenge which involves climbing the three highest mountains in England, Wales and Scotland.

And if that isn’t enough the teenager will also be attempting a daring adventure by kayaking down the River Thames in a bid to raise more money in memory of his sister.

You Raise Me Up has so far helped a number of families locally who have lost teenagers and young people unexpectedly.

As well as help with paying for funeral costs and other expenses, the charity has its own counsellor and the families meet regularly for social functions.

Jane Brooks said the money raised by the boys would help continue its work and added, “It was a fantastic amount they raised with help our work with bereaved families.”

In the past the charity had held fundraising golf days, a day at the races and movie nights at Eastbourne Rugby Club.

The next event planned is a movie night on Friday January 18 and tickets are available in advance only on 482772.
