RESIDENTS at an Eastbourne retirement home are calling on the public’s support to help save their favourite old recipes.

People living at The Hawthorns in Carew Road say ready meals and the microwave are threatening properly cooked food and, with the help of the chef at the home, have decided to fight back.

They are compiling their favourite recipes from yesteryear into a book and plan to offer them to local schools and other organisations.

They hope the recipes can be preserved and younger people will be encouraged to try their hand at cooking them.

Eddie Knowles, the head chef at The Hawthorns, will also be selecting some of the dishes to be served in the dining room for residents and their guests to enjoy.

Hawthorns resident Celia Osbourne, said, “I think it’s very important we don’t lose our old recipes.

“My personal favourite which I have contributed is a recipe for Chelsea buns. They’re so tasty and quite easy to make.”

Angie Peach, manager at The Hawthorns, said, “The idea came about after residents were talking in the coffee lounge about dishes they enjoyed in their youth but which they haven’t had for ages.

“They were saying what a shame it would be if some of these dishes just disappeared in time, so decided to do something about it.

“We would love to receive contributions from anyone who has some tried and tested favourites – the more the merrier. Our plan is to compile them into a book which will be offered to schools and perhaps even sold, with any profits going to our residents’ chosen charity.”

Anyone who would like to contribute can email their recipe to angie.peach@hawthorns-eastbourne.co.uk
