Hampden Park fire being treated as arson
A fire in Hampden Park at the weekend is being treated as arson.
Firefighters say the fire on the top floor of Northumberland Court, a block of council flats in Fletching Road, was started deliberately.
It is the third fire at the property in the last four months.
No one was injured in the blaze, which caused considerable smoke damage to the flat.
On Monday the front window of the flats on the three storey building had been boarded up along with the front door which firefighters had to force to get into the building.
Two crews from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s stations in Eastbourne and Pevensey were called out to the fire shortly before 10pm on Sunday evening.
The fire started in the bedroom of the flat and firefighters spent more than an hour tackling the blaze.
Neighbours said they noticed smoke filling the hallway but were not told to evacuate the building.
The occupant is believed to be a woman in her late 20s who lived in the flat alone.
One neighbour said, “It is the third fire in the last four months and this one was worse than the last two.”
East Sussex Fire and Rescue is now looking into the cause of the blaze.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police said emergency services rushed to the scene.
She said, “Nobody was in the flat.
“ No other flats were endangered. Police enquiries are continuing.”

Eastbourne Borough Council is also investigating the cause of the fire.
