Hailsham schools celebrate improved GCSE results

HAILSHAM Community College has posted a marked improvement on last year's GCSE results, with an 18 per cent increase in pupils achieving five A*-C grades.

Eighty-eight per cent of year 11 pupils recorded 5 GCSEs between A*-C, with 58 per cent doing so in five subjects including maths and English.

Principal Lesley Farmer said, "We are delighted with this stunning 18 per cent improvement in our GCSE performance this year. It is borne of a concerted effort on the part of staff, parents and of course the students themselves. Congratulations to all."

Rosalind Bell achieved three A*s and 13 As, Hayley Blyth two A*s and 11 As and Daniel Li one A* and 13 As.

St Bede's improved on last year's results with 84 per cent achieving A*-C grades.

Anna Hutchins, Alice Lynch, Henry Todman and twins Tom and Maddie Glenn were among the high achievers at the school in The Dicker.

Students who took Spanish, Italian, Russian, applied art, graphic design, ceramics, photography and textiles, music and dance achieved a 100 per cent pass rate A*-C.

Dr Richard Maloney, headmaster, said, "Our drive to innovate, support the individual and motivate all students remains undimmed.

"We are so proud of our students, and our measure of success is how well each individual does.

"For some, B grades are a triumph whilst others might find A*s come easily.

"Staff spend a tremendous amount of time coaching and supporting every youngster and these wonderful results will fuel our ambition to even greater successes in the coming years."
