Hailsham Country Park to enter bloom awards

HAILSHAM Country Park, described as 'the jewel in the town's crown', is again hoping to scoop honours in a regional competition.

It has been entered into the Best Public Park section of the South and South East in Bloom contest for the second year in a row.

Judges last year were impressed by the park, the work to restore the wildflower meadow and the construction of a new path around Wentworth Pond, and gave it a silver award.

Work already carried out this year has included repairs to fencing and the introduction of more bins, while future plans include more enhancements to the wildflower meadow and the creation of a 'bee farm'.

The ideas have been generated by Hailsham Town Council's South and South East in Bloom committee, as it attempts to impress judges again this summer.

They will visit the park in July and will mark it on various criteria, including biodiversity levels, landscaping design, disabled access, ongoing maintenance and overall community involvement.

Deputy mayor Jeff Bentley-Astor, who leads the town's South and South East in Bloom bid team, said, "The judges' feedback last year stated that, although the Hailsham Country Park is a very attractive and well-used facility, the site will benefit considerably from a few additional tweaks, including the installation of more directional and interpretive signage.

"We will endeavour to carry out as many of these modifications as possible in time for the judges' visit to the town in July.

"Local people already know that the Hailsham Country Park is the jewel in Hailsham's crown.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank town council works staff for their efforts in maintaining the park to such a high standard over the years, helping to make it a worthy contender for the regional prize."
