Give tinned goods for the Salvation Army's Christmas tin appeal

NEEDY families across Eastbourne will hopefully enjoy a happy Christmas this year thanks to two appeals being run by the Salvation Army with the support of the Herald.

The public can donate tins and non-perishable foods as well as new toys and gifts for children up to 16 which will be distributed to children and families in need through the Eastbourne citadel of the Salvation Army in the run-up to the festive period.

Collection bins have already been placed in the town's supermarkets for the food to be donated.

They can be found at Waitrose in Old Town, the Tesco stores in Lottbridge Drove and Langney Shopping Centre, Asda at the Crumbles, Sainsbury's in the Arndale Centre and Hampden Park and also at the Eastbourne Gazette and Herald office in Lismore Road.

Toys or gifts for children can be left in collection boxes at Superdrug and M&S in Terminus Road.

Pauline Peagam, community development worker at the citadel in Langney Road, said, "Each year the Salvation Army helps families in need so they can enjoy Christmas.

"Non-perishable items such as soup, spaghetti and biscuits can be taken to the supermarkets and then passed on to people in need at Christmas time.

"They may be people sleeping rough or families in temporary accommodation on limited incomes."

On Wednedsday December 17 Eastbourne's mayor Greg Szanto will visit the citadel and help the team of volunteers pack food in to parcels which will then be distributed.

Helpers will also be wrapping presents which will be handed out to families with children in time for Christmas.

Pauline added, "By giving a gift to our Christmas Present Appeal, people can make a real difference to someone's life at Christmas.

"We need the public's help to make Christmas special for children, families and others who have little or nothing under the tree on Christmas morning."

Among the items on the wish list are toys, CDs, DVDs, stationery sets, toiletries, educational games and toys, books and vouchers.

The appeal runs until Friday December 19.
