Give the town’s young a chance to work bid

The Big Apprenticeship Conversation

The Big Apprenticeship Conversation

Give Eastbourne’s young a chance to work is the message from Eastbourne and District Enterprise Agency and Chamber of Commerce together with Sussex Downs College and Eastbourne Herald as they join forces to encourage employers in the town to take on an Apprentice in the lead up to National Apprenticeship Week in March.

Ray Mason, chief executive of the Chamber, said, “Together they want to kick start the New Year.

“We are appealing to local employers, large, medium or small, to consider taking on an Apprentice and helping our young people progress into meaningful work.

“Our target is to encourage employers to create 100 new apprenticeships. To help us we have the backing of the Eastbourne Hotels Association who will be working with their members to spread the message.”

Unemployment amongst young people has reached proportions not seen for a generation, and their biggest barrier to work is lack of experience.

The structure of an apprenticeship provides the ideal start for someone seeking their first step into employment.

Apprenticeships are paid employment that offers on the job training and at the same time, leads to nationally recognised qualifications.

Taking on Apprentices is straightforward. Sussex Downs College will help promote the position, supply a shortlist of suitable applicants for interview, and provide on-going support for employers, and young people, throughout the apprenticeship.

Apprentices should work for at least 30 hours a week. Some will attend College one day a week, while others are visited by their assessor in the workplace

If you have never employed an Apprentice, or not taken one on in the last year, you may be eligible for a £1,500 government grant.

A special launch event is being organised at the Birley Centre in Carlisle Road on Thursday January 24 starting at 9am till 10.30am. The event is aimed at employers who want to find out more about apprenticeships.
