Girl suffers burns after falling on railway line

A TEENAGE girl suffered burns after falling onto a railway line in Arlington on Monday morning.

The 16-year-old girl, believed to be a foreign student from a school in Kent, slipped accidentally on to the tracks at a footpath crossing near Endlewick Farm, between Polegate and Berwick stations.

Paramedics and officers from British Transport Police (BTP) attended the scene just after 10am on Monday (June 15).

The girl was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital with burns but her injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

British Transport Police added the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson said, "BTP and Sussex Police officers attended Endlewick Farm occupational crossing near to Berwick rail station on Monday after receiving a report of a girl slipping and falling onto the tracks.

"Paramedics from the local ambulance service attended and a 16-year-old girl, who suffered burns as a result of the incident, was taken to hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

"Members of the public are reminded that the third rail, which powers trains across London and the south east, carries 750 volts of electricity and remains switched on 24 hours a day seven days a week."

The girl was believed to be part of a group of around seven students from Sevenoaks School, who were in the area on a field trip.

Andy Deane, who owns Endlewick Farm, praised two of the students who ran across fields to alert him following the incident.

He told the Gazette, "You've got to commend those boys who ran up here and raised the alarm, they were fantastic."

Train operator Southern said services were 'unaffected' by the incident, but drivers were asked to travel at much lower speeds in the area.

The line was not closed at any time.
