Garage boss wins award after work with youngsters
A DRIVEN Eastbourne garage boss, who is helping vulnerable young people to change their lives, has won a national STAR Award.
Andy Russell, who has two garages – Southern Co and Seaside garage – in the town, has been named Workplace Mentor of the Year by national employment charity Shaw Trust.
The trust helps disabled and disadvantaged people to achieve work and independence through employment.
The 49-year-old garage boss only launched his business five years ago and now employs 10 local people.
Busy Andy also takes time to give local 14 to 16-year-olds the chance to turn their lives around by welcoming them on work placements and visits.
Sara Dobbs, a training and placement officer for Shaw Trust's East Sussex Young People's Services, said, "The teenagers I work with are very vulnerable young adults who have been excluded, or are in danger of being excluded, from school, and some are young offenders. They are used to doors being shut in their faces, but Andy welcomes them in and that alone gives them such a boost."
But modest Andy says he is just doing what everyone should do. He said, "We all need a chance at some stage of our lives."
Andy received his STAR Award at a ceremony on November 11. The Workplace Mentor accolade is one of 14 awards in eight categories, including national employer, local employer and individual achievements.
Winners are chosen from nominations across the whole country.
Employers who would like to follow Andy's lead in helping disadvantaged people into work can contact Shaw Trust via www.shaw-trust.org.uk.
