'Gaping hole' in Seaford high street is filled

A NEW store will be opening in Seaford at the old Woolworths site in Broad Street.

The town's MP Norman Baker said the move was a 'sign of confidence returning to the High Street' and the announcement comes after more than a year of the unit being empty.

Shoppers in Seaford were saddened when they heard that High Street chain Woolworths had gone into administration during the winter of 2008, with one customer calling the popular business 'an institution' but the latest development that clothing store M&Co will be opening its doors soon has been welcomed by Mr Baker and Gerri Ori, president of Seaford Chamber of Commerce.

Work is currently underway to get the business – previously known as Mackays – open for mid to late summer.

Mr Baker said, "It's good news for the town and it's very important that a retail unit is filled – it was a gaping hole.

"This is a sign of confidence returning to the high street."

Mr Ori called the move 'positive' and added, "It's good news for the town.

"More shops are starting to use the vacant buildings and there are quite a few new shops, we're positive about the town.

"It's quite reassuring and there is a good, upbeat affluent feel to the town now shops are filling up."

There are nearly 300 M&Co stores in the UK and while it predominantly sells ladies wear a number of stores also sell men and children's wear among other items.

A spokesperson from the firm's head office said, "The store will continue to sell ladies wear but we are also hoping to bring children's clothes into the Seaford store as well.

"Seaford is an area that we have looked at moving to before but there has not be an unit available."
