The funeral of a Hampden Park man who died after being attacked outside his local shop took place on Friday (January 11).

Chris Poole, who was described by his partner as a ‘soul mate’ and ‘great father figure’, died on August 16 last year, the day after the incident.

The 46-year-old, of Iden Street, had popped to the Premier shop with his two dogs when the tragic incident happened.

After his death his grieving partner Penny paid tribute to him.

She said, “I’m devastated by the loss of a best friend and my soulmate, also the great father figure to all our children.

“You’ll always be in my heart and I love you forever.”

Penny, who has two children from a previous relationship, said Mr Poole considered the children his own and said the family as a whole was very close knit.

Mourning friends and family gathered at Eastbourne Crematorium on Friday afternoon to remember Mr Poole and pay their respects. Family and friends also attended a gathering at Chris’s family home afterwards funeral.

People donated to Victim Support or East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS). Mr Poole had a love of wildlife with a particular passion for birds, which is why WRAS was chosen.

His mother Diane added, “Chris was a great and loving son, brother to devastated Rick, lover of wild birds and animals and a friend to anyone.

“Chris attended Ratton School with Rick and was an excellent gymnast and always kept himself fit.”

She described his death as ‘such a waste of a lovely young man who gave such a lot to so many and who was loved so dearly by us all’.

She said the family had been brilliantly supported by police liaison officers Andy and Julian and victim support officer Ali.

Mr Poole went to Ratton School and worked as the assistant manager at Poundland.

He also leaves behind father Tom and brother Rick.
