Fly-tipper targets speedway stadium

THIS was the heap of household rubbish dumped by a fly-tipper on land near the Arlington Stadium.

George Ripley Jnr, 29, of Swan Road, Hailsham, pleaded guilty to three charges of fly-tipping in front of magistrates in Eastbourne.

Wealden District Council prosecuted Ripley after the pile of rubbish, including a sofa and mattress, was found close to the home of Eastbourne Eagles speedway team.

Ripley was given aa one-year conditional discharge, and the council was awarded full costs.

Councillor Sylvia Tidy, Wealden's cabinet member for environmental services, warned fly-tippers that the council would always prosecute.

But she also urged residents to ensure those who take away household waste are correctly registered and will dispose of the rubbish legally.

Cllr Tidy said, "We take a hard line against those who spoil our beautiful countryside.

"Unfortunately, these environmental criminals are being unwittingly helped by members of the public who fail to make sure that traders who take away household waste are properly registered.

"All householders and businesses now have a duty of care to ensure their waste is taken away to proper sites by authorised individuals or companies.

"They must be registered as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency.

"Please think responsibly and help our community combat the fly tipping menace."

Cllr Tidy added that registered building firms and decorators would happily volunteer the information required to put people's minds at ease.

If anyone has any doubts about the validity of those disposing of household waste, check the Environment Agency online register on its website or ring 0845 603 3113.

Between April and December last year, there were 401 reported fly tipping cases in Wealden.

Wealden District Council said it had improved its clearance rate over this period, removing 76 per cent of all reported fly-tips within two days.
