Five bailed after fire at seafront lock-up
FIVE men have been arrested after a seafront building was burgled and set on fire.
A blaze ripped through the lock-up unit behind the Sovereign Centre in the early hours of Monday last week.
The building was owned by Eastbourne Borough Council and leased to the Working Men’s Club in Firle Road which used it as a store for jet-skis.
The building was gutted by the fire and the roof had collapsed and it was later reported to police that a jet-ski and kayak had been stolen.
Later that day a member of the public called police after seeing a jet-ski in suspicious circumstances. Officers from Eastbourne’s Neighbourhood Policing Team quickly responded and recovered the jet-ski, together with a pedal cycle which had also been stolen.
Five men have since been arrested on suspicion of arson, burglary and theft offences and released on police bail until October 7 pending further enquiries.
Those arrested are an 18-year-old, two 20-year-olds, a 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old man from Brighton.
Sergeant Julian Williams from Eastbourne’s NPT said, “We are still looking for a bright yellow kayak which is described as a sit-on Ocean.
“If anyone has seen one of these appear in someone’s garden or advertised for sale since Monday then we would urge them to contact police.
“We’d also like to hear from anyone who saw a jet-ski being moved from the beach on Monday morning.
“Anyone with information can contact police on 101 quoting serial 0184 of September 3. Alternatively call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
