A fisherman sustained a serious hand injury, spurring Eastbourne’s RNLI’S all-weather lifeboat (ALB) into action yesterday (Thursday).

The Dutch registered trawler Nova Cura was fishing 18 miles off Eastbourne when the accident happened. The crew was aware that the fishing protection vessel HMS Mersey was in the area and the Dutch skipper requested any help they could give. A first aid team was transferred to the trawler, following the incident on Thursday afternoon, and assessed that the injured man should be taken to hospital.

Dover Coastguard requested the launch of Eastbourne lifeboat and the ALB was soon on its way, with Doctor Colin McKee on board. Dr McKee prepared the casualty to be takento hospital.

The Diamond Jubilee was manoeuvred alongside the trawler and the injured fisherman and Dr McKee were taken onboard and back to Sovereign Harbour where the man was then taken in an ambulance to the DGH.
