Fifty jobs are set to go from Eastbourne after Jones Bootmaker announced it is closing down its Maple Road offices and warehouse.

The shoe retailer plans to close its Eastbourne offices on the industrial estate and relocate all warehousing and distribution to Leicestershire.

Back in April the company announced redundancies as a result of moving some of its distribution to Leicester. However, the HR department, finances and other administration roles were set to remain in Eastbourne.

This changed yesterday (October 15), as management told all 50 remaining staff the Eastbourne office and warehouse would be closing.

Twenty redundancies will be made as a result of the closure but the 30 other staff will be offered jobs at a new commercial office opening in London. Staff who take the London roles will be offered enhanced salaries to account for the travel arrangements they will have to make. The relocation process is expected to be completed by April or May 2013.

Andrew White, managing director of Jones Bootmaker, said, “It is with deep regret that I must announce the likely closure of our Eastbourne base as Jones continues its restructuring process.

“We will do all we can to assist the workforce in the coming months. I would like to thank all our staff for the dedication they have shown Jones.”

A period of consultation with staff will help those affected receive enhanced redundancy packages, and where possible, alternative employment. A specialist company is working with staff to provide support and advice.

The move is part of a wider restructuring strategy being implemented by the Macintosh Retail Group which took over Jones in 2011. The Jones Bootmaker retail store in Eastbourne town centre will remain open and is not affected by this announcement.
