Festival-goers enjoy sunshine as well as French flavour

CHIDDINGLY Festival began amid glorious sunshine at the weekend.

On Friday everyone was in a truly Gallic mood with Divertissement, a performance of mime and dance with music by David Cullen.

With the audience enjoying French-style cocktails and dressing up a la Francais, the evening was a great success.

On Saturday, the Darius Brubeck Quartet enraptured a full house with magical jazz in a unique and intimate atmosphere.

On Sunday, the sun shone all day on the Art and Craft Exhibition, where visitors saw a display of high-standard work from established local artists, including jewellery, paintings, felt work and pottery. Outside, local brewery 1648 from East Hoathly provided welcome refreshment and entertainment was provided by the Chiddingly Mummers, Old Star Morris and the Sea Gypsies Belly Dancers.

Children enjoyed a variety of craft workshops.

In the church, Claire Martin held a jazz-singing workshop, which was a great opportunity for a masterclass with the internationally renowned jazz singer.

The 31st festival continued this week with story-telling plus Poetry in The Pub, and this weekend there are a few tickets remaining for the Classical Concert.

The Vesuvio Wind Quartet will play a varied programme including music by Mozart, Stravinsky, Paul Patterson and Malcolm Arnold. This is a chance to enjoy classical music in the beautiful village church of Chiddingly. The remaining events, comedy with Marcus Brigstocke, folk with Maire NI Chathasaigh and Chris Newman, and a family event with John Hegley and friends are all a sell-out.

The festival goes from strength to strength as its reputation continues to grow, attracting local, national and international artists.
