'Fawlty Towers' hotel should be shut down

Guests and former members of staff at a hotel dubbed Fawlty Towers have called for it to be shut down.

These photos of dirty sheets, damp walls and old soap were taken by a holidaymaker at an Eastbourne hotel. Guests and former members of the hotel dubbed Fawlty Towers have called for it to be shut down.

Since The Herald first exposed the Heatherleigh Hotel in Royal Parade last week for not paying workers, the newspaper has been inundated by complaints from former guests and employees.

On Monday two members of staff protested by refusing to work and one employee walked out, upset as she had not been paid.

The Herald's investigation has found several former hotel workers are owed money and say they have been paid illegally-low wages.

Guests have reported excrement and blood on unwashed sheets, dirty rooms and bed bugs. Cleaners say they were expected to clean the toilets and cups with the same cloth and were allegedly told not to change the bed linen.

Hotel boss Neelam Sawhney denies all the allegations of illegal wages, unpaid staff and unwashed sheets.

She admitted a past problem with bed bugs but said, "Ninety-nine per cent of the problem is over and dealt with."

She blamed 'lazy staff' and said 'these are all lies' from other hoteliers who are 'jealous of us and our business'.

But guests who visited the Heatherleigh Hotel last week said they had a 'weekend from hell' and complained of dirty bed sheets and an infestation of bed bugs.

Jennifer Williamson and her husband also stayed at the Heatherleigh in September.

Mrs Williamson, who took these photos said, "We requested a low floor room as my husband is 87 and I have disability problems. We were given a top floor room and on seeing the dilapidated lift, we asked to be moved to a low floor room. The room we were given wasn't up to the standard expected of an hotel. One of the beds had a dirty sheet and blanket streaked with excrement."
