Family racially abused in Eastbourne - girl of four among those targeted
A gang of young men racially abused a woman, her daughter and her grand-daughter while they were walking in Eastbourne, then chucked a brick at their family car.
The victims were walking along Beatty Road at around 11pm on Monday when the group of five men, reportedly drunk, approached them and started to hurl abuse.
Shortly after, they were picked up by a family member in a silver Honda Civic and as they passed the group, one of the men picked up a brick and threw it at the car, damaging the bonnet.
The man who threw the brick is described as white, in his 20s, of medium build and around six foot tall. He was wearing a hi-vis fluorescent jacket, as were the other men. It is thought that they may have been picked up in a taxi and taken into Eastbourne town centre. Prior to the incident, they may have been in the harbour area.
It is also believed that at one point a young man, aged 18-20, of chubby build, wearing three-quarter length jeans and riding a BMX bike stopped to talk to the group and police would also like to speak to him.
PC Steven Shimmons said, “This was very harrowing for all of the victims, not least because of the racial aspect of it, but especially as the youngest victim, the grand-daughter, is just four years old.
“It’s not a crime that we’re used to seeing in Eastbourne and it’s certainly not one that will be tolerated.
“If you witnessed the incident or have any information that could lead us to the offenders, please call 101 quoting serial 2208 of 20/08.”
