Estate's bid for a traffic light controlled T-junction
The Kingsmere Community Association has launched a campaign to make the entrance to the estate safer — with easier access for emergency services.
Campaigners want a traffic light controlled T-junction created at the entrance to Kingsmere and Kings Park off the A259 Pevensey Bay Road.
A spokesperson said, "The number of serious accidents, injuries and fatalities on the A259 Pevensey Bay Road is far too high.
"These are often due to speeding, on this stretch of road. The speed limit is 40mph, yet often cars are exceeding 50mph or even 60mph.
"There are no speed cameras and at this time and no way to slow the traffic.
"A T-junction controlled by traffic lights would slow down the traffic in both directions, leading to fewer accidents or accidents at a slower speed, hence less serious injuries/fatalities."
Campaigners say that every time the emergency services need to get to Kingsmere or Kings Park, they have an additional minimum of four minutes added to their journey because there is no right hand turn into Kingsmere.
"This could easily cost lives, be they in house fires or heart attack victims," added the spokesperson.
"Further, by the time the police get on to Kingsmere the criminals have been alerted by their sirens and had ample time to get away.
"Add to this the fact that just one car making the journey to and from Kingsmere once a day burns up 182 miles per year, wasting petrol and damaging the ozone layer.
"Time this by 300 cars at just once a day and you are looking at a huge waste of time, money and petrol.
"Traffic lights at the T-Junction would also give a much safer option for residents who live on Kingsmere to cross the road nearer to Kingsmere Way.
"Our campaign is being supported by the Lib Dems and the Conservatives.
"We appreciate the support from the political parties but this is a KCA-driven campaign, not a political one."
