Elderly lady dies in Herstmonceux house blaze

An elderly woman has died in a house fire in Herstmonceux.

Firefighters were called to a property in West End at 2.05pm today (Wednesday February 22).

The woman was rescued, but died at the scene.

Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service are investigating the cause of the fire, but it is not being treated as suspicious.

Wealden District police commander, Chief Inspector Dick Coates said, “This is a desperately sad incident and our thoughts are with the lady’s family and friends at this time.

“There is nothing to suggest at this stage that there is anything suspicious about the cause of the fire, but a full investigation will be carried out to confirm this belief.”
