Eastbourne projects get cash boost

A RANGE of community projects have been given a boost by councillors.
Eastbourne has benefited from the devolved budget scheme, an amount of money set aside for councillors to spend on worthwhile community projects in their wards.
Councillors helped Hampden Park in Bloom utilise the scheme to install around £700 worth of flower boxes in shopping areas and the railway station.
The funds will also be used to support the Diana Memorial Garden. Funding of £500 was also given to the Hampden Park Outdoor Bowling Association for a completely new frontage to their clubhouse, including wheelchair-friendly access.
Councillor Pat Hearn said: “This is a very popular and much needed facility and we are delighted to be involved. The improved clubhouse will give greater accessibility for the disabled and we wish the bowlers in Hampden Park a long and continuing success.”
Meads and Old Town also benefited from the scheme and ward councillors allocated £500 for signage for the Paradise Woods Cycle Trail. Also in Meads, councillors have used the scheme to help with the second phase of a program to upgrade a computer system at the Eastbourne Heritage Centre.
Willingdon Road has seen devolved budget investment from Ratton and Upperton councillors in the revamping and replacement of railings along the road.
An additional £3,000 has also been spent on 11 new trees to flank the carriageway. Regency Park Residents Association received a welcome boost thanks to Devonshire ward councillors, who used money from their devolved budget to help with website design and a new notice board for the group.
The improvements will help the group to advertise community functions on a larger scale, as well as providing key information for any local residents.
