Eastbourne Food Bank expands due to demand
GROWING demand for emergency supplies has forced a food charity to move to bigger premises.
Eastbourne Foodbank, which opened a year ago, outgrew its Bridgemere Road storage and on February 10 celebrated its official opening at its new Cornfield Lane warehouse.
Howard Wardle, project manager, said, “In many ways it’s very sad that our services are in such demand but times are very tough for people and supplying an emergency pack of food is really the least we can do to help ease the situation.
“Eastbourne Foodbank provides three days’ worth of food (10 meals) for a household and is 100 per cent reliant on donations.
“Eastbourne people have been amazing, bringing in food to the warehouse and responding very generously to us when we’ve handed out shopping lists at supermarkets.
“In fact, we couldn’t have moved into this building if it wasn’t for the kind services given to us free by local companies. A special thanks must be given to Tim & Simon from Ark Services & Baxi Boilers for putting a heating system in the building.
“Since we first started up the project here in Eastbourne we have helped more than 1,300 individuals and we know that there are many more people who need our help. If you would like to get to help us, please visit our website and take a look at the shopping list.

The Foodbank system works by referral. Care professionals, such as doctors, health visitors and many agencies working with vulnerable people identify those in need and issue a voucher, which is then exchanged for a food package.
Foodbank clients come into the centre to collect food and are often signposted to other agencies more able to help solve longer term problems.
