Eastbourne doctor launches Pakistan flood appeal

AN Eastbourne doctor and his National Health Service colleagues have set up a public fundraising appeal to help victims of the devastating floods in Pakistan.

Relief agencies say they have already killed 1,500 people and more than 300,000 livestock, and displaced more than 20 million people - an even bigger catastrophe than the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004.

Staff at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, led by consultant psychiatrist Dr Hamid Naliyawala, have set up the Pakistan Flood Relief Association Sussex (PFRAS) to collect donations countywide.

Dr Naliyawala works in a community mental health service in Eastbourne and has a track record in organising disaster relief appeals.

When an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Pakistan in 2005, Dr Naliyawala set up a similar appeal and raised more than 5,000 from Trust staff and people in Sussex.

The cash paid for an ambulance for the Pakistan Red Crescent, and remaining funds were given to run a school in an affected area. Money raised by PFRAS will fund ongoing rehabilitation, medical supplies and rehousing.

Anyone keen to contribute to the fund can do so using a bank transfer to HSBC, account Pakistan Flood Relief Association Sussex, account number 42047888, branch sort code 40-20-06

Or they can send a cheque, made payable to the Pakistan Flood Relief Association Sussex, to Dr A.H. Naliyawala, PFRAS, St Mary's House, 52 St Leonard's Road, Eastbourne, BN21 3UU.

Dr Naliyawala said, "I was very humbled by the generosity showed by the people of Sussex in 2005, when the earthquake hit Pakistan. I would like to express my gratitude to all those who donated then and appeal for people to show the same generous spirit this time.

"If anything the destruction is even more widespread. Fifteen per cent of crops have been destroyed with after effects for years to come, and up to 90 per cent of some cities are submerged."

He added, "More floods are on the away with further rains. We will not know the true damage until the water recedes.

"Please donate whatever you can. Even a small donation will go a long way towards rebuilding lives."
