A 19-year-old Eastbourne man has been sentenced to four years in a young offenders’ institution today after pleading guilty to robbery.

Richie Foyle, of Ashford Road, appeared before Hove Crown Court charged with robbery of a man in Eastbourne town centre on September 29 last year.

The court heard that Foyle approached the 37-year-old victim who was making his way home after a night out with friends. Foyle demanded his phone and other personal belongings. The victim tried to stand-up to Foyle and the group he was wth and then told to empty his pockets.

The victim was then attacked by members of the group and suffered injuries including severe bruising to the arm, face and ribs and also injuries to his neck and face.

During the robbery his phone and wallet were stolen.

Sentencing Foyle, Mr Recorder McGuiness told him: “You wanted the victim’s phone and when he refused you demanded that he emptied his pockets.

“The others arrived and he ended up on the ground.

He was kicked in the ribs and his mobile telephone and £30 was stolen.

“The injuries he sustained from the robbery and the force that was used included major bruising to his bicep and to the front and side of his neck. There was a stamp mark on his forehead and he received a black eye.”

After the case, Detective Constable John Steven from Eastbourne CID said: “This was an unprovoked and serious attack on a man who was out enjoying himself in our town. With positive action, justice has been attained and I hope also, some closure for the victim. This sentence will ensure that a dangerous offender will remain off our streets for some time to come.”
