Eastbourne schools battling to save lollipop man
FUNDRAISING has started to save the ‘vital’ St Philip’s Avenue lollipop man.
David Bousfield has become a popular figure with parents, teachers and children after manning the crossing in St Philip’s Avenue for the last six years – a crossing which serves both Roselands Primary School and Stafford Junior School.
However, when a new zebra crossing was built at St Philip’s Avenue last year, other roads in the county became higher priority for the school crossing patrol funding.
The funding for the lollipop man is due to stop soon but parents at both schools say a patrol at the crossing is vital and they have now started a fundraising campaign to pay his wages.
Amanda Drakeley, treasurer of Stafford PTFA, is a mum-of-two and has a child at both Stafford and Roselands.
She said, “St Philips Avenue crossing is so dangerous.
“The children are obscured from view by walls in both directions, meaning that car drivers can not see them approaching the crossing.
“The presence of the lollipop man is vital, without him we are worried it will not be long before a child is seriously hurt.”
To raise money, the schools are holding a joint Easter Lollipop Appeal at Stafford School with tea, coffee, hot cross buns and cakes.
There will also be a children’s Easter egg hunt at the event which will take place at Stafford on March 31 between 10am and 12noon.
Amanda said the event was not just for the children and parents of the schools but for the whole community.
She said, “It is not just the school children who use the lollipop man.
“That road is difficult to cross even for adults so the lollipop man provides a valuable service.”
