Eastbourne's Lammas Festival returns to the Western Lawns

THE TENTH Eastbourne Lammas Festival will be taking place on the Western Lawns, seafront and town centre from 11am on July 31 and August 1.

The festival is a pageant of Morris dancing, carnival giants and live music from traditional and folk-rock to modern jazz.

Each day starts with Morris dancing in differing styles, with Hunters Moon Morris and guests along with drumming from the Pentacle Drummers.

The Eastbourne Giants Herne and Andred will once again lead dancers, drummers and festival-goers in performances at the Pier before making their way along the prom and returning to the Western Lawns, the main festival site in a spectacular carnival parade at 12pm each day.

A festival spokesperson said, "Anyone of any age is invited to join the parade if they come along to the Pier entrance at noon, though children must be accompanied by an adult.

"Feel free to dress up! Raid your dressing-up boxes, strap on a pair of fairy wings or garland your hair with flowers and join in. The more the merrier!"

The weekend features live bands and performers including Touchstone, headlining on Saturday afternoon, the Ragati String Band, The Slight Aches, Black Strap Molasses and the Blue Shift Jazz Band.

Visitors can bring a picnic or buy refreshments on site. The Beer Tent is run by The 1648 Brewery who brew their Lammas Ale for the event.

There will also be clothing, book, jewellery and craft stalls, as well as demonstrations and children's entertainment including face painting, story telling, Punch and Judy and a bouncy castle. Sunday ends with a Ceilidh led by Rattlebone. The festival annually raises money for the RNLI.
