Eastbourne’s enterprising schoolchildren

Enterprising youngsters challenged themselves to create a Kids-Zone plans as part of an annual competition.

Nine teams of Year 4 pupils took part in the second Junior Enterprise Challenge on October 1.

The event was organised by Eastbourne Education Business Partnership.

Representatives from Eastbourne Borough Council, Chalvington Communications, Barclays, Apollo Property Services and Business SatNav were on hand to assist the teams with business advice and to help with judging.

Eastbourne Theatres provided the venue and Manor Creative contributed some of the materials.

Eastbourne mayor Mike Thompson also attended to help with judging and to present prizes.

Prior to the challenge the teams were asked to research a family day out and to establish a ‘company’ with job roles but weren’t told what the challenge was until the next day.

The teams were asked to design the layout and plan a kids-zone within the redeveloped Wish Tower site. They were also required to design a lunch box and cup sleeve as well as write a radio advertisement.

The teams were judged on their business plan and presentation, the specific challenge tasks and how well they worked.

Cllr Thompson said, “We were very impressed with the team’s ideas and presentations, making judging an enjoyable challenge itself.”

An EEBP spokesman said, “This school event recognises the importance of enterprise to the local economy and aims to put some real business lessons into context for the pupils.”

The winners, Moira House School, received a trophy. There were book tokens for the winners and runners-up, Pevensey and Westham School.
