Eastbourne ready to remember

The town will remember its war dead on Sunday with a host of events across the town.

The main service will be at the Flying Angel War Memorial in Cornfield Road at 11am after a parade from the Royal Air Forces Association Club in Wish Road at 10.15am.

Across the town Remembrance Day will be commemorated at most churches.

At St Mary’s Church Willingdon the Parish Eucharist will be held at the earlier time of 9.15am to allow time for the Service of Remembrance which follows at 10.50am.

As in previous years, there will be a procession with the Royal British Legion, ex-service men and women and the youth organisations who meet at the corner of Upper Kings Drive and Wish Hill for the procession along Church Street to St Mary’s in time for the service. The route will be closed to traffic while this is taking place.

At 3pm there will be a short Service of Remembrance at the Ruth-less Memorial at Butts Brow, when 10 poppy crosses will be laid on the memorial – one for each of the crew who died in the ill-fated American Liberator bomber ‘Ruth-less’ which crashed on the Downs in February 1944.

The Remembrance Sunday service at St Andrew’s Church Jevington is at 10.50am, and at Trinity Church in Coppice Avenue it is at 10.30am.

Poppies are available for sale across the town at various locations.

Today (Friday November 9) the Redoubt is hosting an event with drama performances and readings by local schools and community groups in the parade ground swirling with poppies to mark the Remembrance weekend.

The two minute silence will be marked with a bugle call of the Last post and the lowering of the standards by Standards and Bearers from the Maritime Volunteer Service.

This will be accompanied by hundreds of paper poppies being dropped from around the fortress’s gun platforms into the parade ground.
