A peace protestor from Eastbourne has been arrested by the Israeli army, according to reports coming from Tel Aviv.

Eleanor Clayton is a member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) and had travelled to the Middle East as part of a pro-Palestine campaign, attending a demonstration last Friday.

She was arrested by Israeli forces and claims to have been kicked, beaten and strangled by soldiers before spending 36 hours in detention, together with three other peace activists and two Palestinian men.

The 24-year-old former Cavendish student, was then taken to court for a brief hearing held exclusively in Hebrew, where the four protestors were accused of throwing stones at soldiers – a charge they all deny.

According to sources in Tel Aviv, prosecutors asked the judge for permission to detain Miss Clayton for seven days, but this was rejected, with just an additional 12 hours allowed.

All four are now under house arrest for seven days, after which they will either be freed to return to their human rights work in the occupied Palestinian territories or deported.

Miss Clayton only arrived in Israel on September 3, and has been carrying out work documenting events in the West Bank. The demonstration that she attended last Friday was in the Palestinian village of Kufr Qaddoum, where villagers regularly demonstrate against the closure of the main road out of the village.

Miss Clayton claims that during her arrest, soldiers deleted photographs and video evidence from the camera she used to record events.

The status of the Palestinian men arrested at the same time as Miss Clayton is unknown.
