Dummy fines for yobs
Dummy 'fines' are being handed out to people using bad language as part of a crackdown on anti social behaviour.
And police are also slapping the 80 pretend tickets on cars to warn off potential vandals and alert owners of vehicles at risk.
Sergeant Stella Wells, a specialist neighbourhood officer in Eastbourne, said, "Due to the continual anti social behaviour that is being experienced within Eastbourne, police will start issuing dummy 80 fine tickets to any person who is found to be using bad language, or who is abusive or threatening in a public place.
"The ticket clearly states that what an individual may think is a laugh could offend other members of the public and may leave them liable to be issued with a fixed penalty notice that will cost them 80 in a fine.
"These tickets are issued to advise persons thinking of committing public order offences how much they will be fined if they are found to be involved in any such incidents. It is better to try and educate people about their behaviour and offer advice before they commit offences which will see them having to pay money out."
The dummy charge ticket is also being used to crack down on criminal damage.
There has been an increase in the number of unattended vehicles being damaged and police believe motorists can help reduce the problem by tucking their wing mirrors in and retracting their aerials.
The dummy 80 tickets will advise motorists to take precautions and make them safer from vandalism and accidental damage.
Sgt Wells added, "As a direct result of a large number of incidents being reported to police where unattended motor vehicles have had criminal damage caused to them by having the wing mirrors ripped off, police officers are running an initiative whereby dummy 80 charge tickets are being placed on the windscreens of parked vehicles.
"These tickets will be advising the owners to tuck their wing mirrors in and retract their aerials when the vehicle is parked as this will make them safer from vandalism or accidental damage which could cost the vehicle owner up to 80 to replace.
"These tickets are being given out to make people aware of what it could cost them to replace broken wing mirrors and aerials should they be broken. It is also better to give people crime prevention advise before they become a victim. "
"It is also to advise people thinking of committing public order offences how much they will be fined if they are found to be involved in any such incidents. It is better to try and educate people about their behaviour and offer advice before they either become the victim of a crime or commit offences which will see them having to pay money out."
