Drink driver planned to kill himself at cliffs
A MOTORIST who planned to drive over cliffs at Beachy Head has been banned from the road after being found to be over the drink drive limit.
Sean Buckley had travelled to the notorious suicide spot and was trying to drive up a bank to the cliff edge but failed. A witness alerted chaplains who removed the car keys from the 53-year-old’s car and they could smell alcohol on his breath.
Police arrived at the scene and arrested Buckley, an alcoholic. A reading showed he had 88mcg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mcg.
He told police he had four cans of San Miguel and had driven from Haywards Heath to take his own life.
Buckley, who has no previous convictions, appeared at Eastbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday October 9. The defendant, of Arlington Court, Haywards Heath, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.
Noelle Magennis, defending, said her client had gone through a divorce, adding, “On August 19 he was feeling very low. He’s suffered from depression for some time. His intention was to drive to Beachy Head and commit suicide. “Thankfully that didn’t happen and he was arrested. He has pleaded guilty and I ask you give credit for that. This was committed because he was feeling so low he decided the only option he had was to take his own life.
“This seems to have helped as he has approached the mental health services in Haywards Heath who are encouraging him to get help.”
Buckley was banned from driving for 12 months, fined £110 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. He can reduce his ban by three months if he takes a drink driver rehabilitation course.
