DGH doctors will be tested every five years
Doctors working at the DGH will be expected to prove they are fit to work on a regular basis under a new agreement formalised by NHS management.
East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs the Kings Drive hospital, has signed up to a new system called medical revalidation which is being introduced across the UK by the General Medical Council (GMC).
It means that doctors working for the trust will have to demonstrate their fitness to practise in order to provide assurance to their patients, the public, colleagues and their employers.
Each expert will be formally assessed by the GMC every five years throughout their careers – with existing staff being given the date of their first revalidation visits in December.
It is hoped that most doctors will have undergone that initial testing by March 2016.
Dr David Hughes, medical director at the Trust, said, “All our licensed doctors, along with all other doctors in the UK, will be expected to undertake an annual appraisal with information collected about their practice, including feedback from patients, doctors, nurses and other colleagues.
“Doctors will be expected to demonstrate they meet clinical standards and have kept up to speed with the latest developments in their field.”
To help with the smooth running of the revalidation process the Trust has launched a new online medical revalidation system which will track every doctor’s appraisal, making life easier for them to store documents which will help them demonstrate they meet the required standards.
It also means that the Trust can track where doctors are in the appraisal and revalidation process.
The hope is that the new system will improve the confidence patients have in the NHS.
