DELI SET TO BLOSSOM IN VILLAGE

GASTRONOMIC delights from around the world are to be sold by a couple who quit their jobs as top London chefs to open their own business.

Andy Frith and partner Kathy Little will be getting behind the counter of their delicatessen which opens on today (October 24).

It's been two years of planning for the couple who say that they want to take their experience of working in the kitchen to the public and teach them about the food they're selling.

From cooking for members of the royal family and A-list celebrities, the move to their premises on the Village Green in East Dean is a sweeping change of culture for the pair.

Andy, 41, who worked at the Michelin two star Le Gavroche Restaurant with chef Michel Roux, said he felt East Dean was the ideal location.

''As soon as the boards went up advertising this place, we were straight in and made a call to the agent,'' he said.

''My mum who lives in the village spotted it and we looked around and thought it was ideal. Our main priority is selling high quality food. Everything here will be the best of its range.

''There is nothing like what we're planning to do in Sussex. I know that what we'll be offering will be the best that can't be bought elsewhere.''

Already on its way to the village are cheeses from Italy and France and sliced meats from Spain.

There will also be a selection of organic vegetables, high quality chocolates, fresh pasta and olive oils.

Sussex products are also high on the list of priorities for the pair.

''The change from London to East Dean will be interesting for us,'' said Kathy, who hopes to bring products in from her native New Zealand. We both love food and we were always walking around London on our days off going into gastro pubs for meals and delis to see what they were doing.

''We often said to one another 'why don't we do this?' and then this opportunity arose and we went for it.''

The business – Frith and Little, which will be open six days a week, will welcome its first customers on Tuesday morning.
