Date set for Wealden's Hailsham move

HAILSHAM will be the sole home of Wealden District Council by 2012, according to a senior councillor.

Cllr Bob Standley, Wealden's cabinet member for finance and assets, said, despite the savings drive announced recently, the plan was still to push ahead with a single-site HQ at Vicarage Lane.

Currently, the council has a second head office in Crowborough and splits its services and meetings between the two.

But council bosses have long been keen to merge the two headquarters into one site.

It had originally planned to spend 12 million on an entirely new, state-of-the-art building at Vicarage Lane, but this idea was shelved in March due to the cost.

Instead, the existing offices will evolve to become the single-site HQ when Crowborough is eventually closed.

Cllr Standley told colleagues a move date of 2012 had been set.
