Dance bonus for town’s economy
MORE than 1,000 dancers from around the world are in Eastbourne for an international dance competition this week – and the council believes they will bring £1.5 million revenue to the town.
IDF Dance Championships are welcoming performers from Ireland, Scotland, France, Spain, Italy, India, Hungary, Lithuania, Romania, Poland, Russia and the Ukraine.
Over the last six months Eastbourne’s Tourism Office has booked accommodation for most of the competitors, bringing business to hotels and guest houses.
The International Dance Federation (IDF) 10th World Dance Championships in Modern Dance Sport take place at the Devonshire Park Centre until May 27.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Neil Stanley said, “It is incredibly exciting to host this major world dance event in Eastbourne and host competitors from across the globe, particularly during the Olympic year when all eyes really are on Britain.
“It is the first time the event has been held in the UK so it is a fantastic accolade for Eastbourne to be chosen to stage it and it certainly looks set to bring a great boost to the local economy.”
There was a parade on Wednesday, from the Wish Tower to the Congress Theatre, to welcome the dancers to the town.
