Dad Mark takes on five 100 mile runs for kids’ hospice

An Eastbourne dad is set to run five 100-mile races this year to raise cash for Demelza Children’s Hospice.
Mark Fox will run his first race this Saturday (March 23), when he will follow the river path from Richmond along to Oxford. The 42-year-old, who hopes to complete the five 100-mile runs with his friend Richard Tickner from Langney, says this first run is the flattest. However, the challenge he has set himself for 2013 will see them take on the undulating South Downs Way in June.
The Latimer Road resident only started running five years ago but is now hooked on 100-mile stints. The runs usually take him around 24 hours to complete - running through the night and only stopping to refuel.
When asked why he has decided to take four mammoth runs in just one year, he told the Gazette, “A moment of madness I think.”
But also added, “I do something for charity each year and I feel that if I am going to keep asking people for sponsorship I need to do something that really challenges me.”
Mark is currently running around 75 miles every week to train for the challenge.
His wife Sam and young sons Luke and Dylan hope to see Mark come in at some of the finish lines.
After the Thames path on Saturday and The South Downs Way in June, Mark and Richard will take on Farnham to Knockholt Pound in August, another Eastbourne run in September and a race in Reading in November.
