Couple’s golden gifts request for Macmillan

A KIND-HEARTED couple who celebrated 50 years of marriage last week have asked for their gifts to be a donation to Macmillan after their daughter-in-law received support from the charity.

Sharon Wilson, of Queens Road, Eastbourne, was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly two years ago.

After a mastectomy and chemotherapy she had reconstructive surgery and is now ‘getting back to normal’.

The 48-year-old mum of four told the Herald she received ‘phenomenal’ support from the Macmillan nurses throughout her battle and was touched when her in-laws said they wanted to donate their wedding gift money to the cause.

Jennifer and Ian Wilson, of Upper Willingdon Road, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on September 8 and instead of receiving gifts from friends and family they asked people to make donations to Macmillan.

Sharon said, “In total they raised £200 which I think is wonderful, they did this as a gesture of thanks for the amazing treatment I received.

“I am so very touched by this selfless gesture.”

The couple celebrated their big day with a meal in Polegate with 25 of their friends and family, many of which attended their wedding 50 years ago.

Sharon, Jennifer and Ian all attended Eastbourne District General Hospital this week and handed over a £200 cheque to Macmillan nurse Kerry Chidlow.

Sharon said, “She was a key figure throughout my treatment. She was always at the end of the telephone, on email and at the hospital.

“They work so hard and she is always on the ball and always there.

“It was such a great support and she is still there for me now if I have any queries.”
