Couple have raised more than £12,000

Eastbourne RNLI getting a donation

Eastbourne RNLI getting a donation

A pair of hoteliers were treated to a blustery trip on board Eastbourne’s £2.7million state-of-the-art lifeboat after becoming the latest locals to donate cash to the RNLI.

Jerome and Carol Farrow, who run the Marine Parade Hotel on Eastbourne seafront, have long been supporters of the local lifesavers and, having handed over a cheque for £2,619 towards the charity’s ongoing appeal, the duo were invited to join the volunteer crew on exercise at the weekend.

The latest donation takes the total raised by the Farrows to more than £12,000 and despite overcast conditions, the couple enjoyed a trip to the Beachy Head Lighthouse and back on the recently acquired Diamond Jubilee boat.

The new lifeboat, which was unveiled back in June by The Duke and Countess of Wessex, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, was paid for by a pair of legacies and a mountain of money raised by locals.

However, the RNLI still needs to raise more to pay for training, equipment and the upkeep of the ship, which was one of more than 1,000 boats to be invited to take part in the flotilla on the Thames to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – the event from which it takes its names.

The Diamond Jubilee has been well received by the volunteer crew, which is one of the busiest in the UK.

Between June 1 and August 31 this year the team was called out 44 times – with the all weather boat being needed 15 times and the smaller, inshore boat used 29 times.

And, over the course of the entire year, the RNLI in Eastbourne is consistently among the most active of any station in the country – meaning higher running costs, more regular maintenance and more volunteer training.

For that reason the support of people like the Farrows is key. Gratefully accepting the cheque lifeboat spokesman Colin McKee said, “Supporters like Jerome and Carol ensure the crew put to sea with the best equipment and can continue in their mission to save lives at sea.”
