Countdown for sunshine carnival

WITH just three weeks to go to the Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival, the hunt to find a carnival king and queen is hotting up.

This Saturday (May 12), between 11am and 2pm the Herald and Gazette photographer will be at Bankers Corner in Terminus Road taking photographs of people who want to enter the contest to be chosen as the carnival king and queen.

Anyone, male or female and of any age can simply go along, write their details on a form and have their photograph taken which will then go before a panel of judges who will decide on who will be the chosen two.

Among the judges will be former carnival queens who took part in processions in years gone by.

This year’s carnival king and queen will play a pivotal part in this year’s carnival on Saturday June 2 and will lead the procession in open top cars.

The procession is due to start at the Sovereign Centre at 7pm and make its way up the seafront to the Western Lawns.

Thousands of people are expected to line the route of the procession to watch marching bands, baton twirlers, roller skaters and organisations and businesses on motorised floats.

Organiser and pageant master Dave Cooper said this week it was all systems go for the carnival. He also revealed traffic diversions would be in place between 5.30pm and 8pm on the day of the carnival.

From the Sovereign Centre, Royal Parade, Marine Parade, Grand Parade and King Edwards Parade will all be closed with traffic being diverted along Seaside and Seaside Road to the junction with Cavendish Place, along Pevensey Road and Lismore Road to the War Memorial roundabout, along Cornfield Terrace and Chiswick Place, into Compton Street and through Silverdale Road to get back onto the seafront.
