Councillor voices residents’ fears over plan for hundreds of houses

Cllr Tony Freebody highlights concern about new home proposals

CONCERNS about allowing 650 new homes in Stone Cross have been highlighted by the area’s county councillor.

Pevensey and Westham County Councillor Tony Freebody says residents are concerned about Wealden District Council’s proposals to allow development in the area.

The district council is currently consulting on its Strategic Sites Development Plan which pinpoints areas which the council believes would be suitable for new homes in the future.

Wealden District Council is planning to allow up to 650 new houses in the Stone Cross area alone, with a further 2,000 houses around Polegate and Hailsham.

Cllr Tony Freebody said, “Many residents have highlighted their concerns over the proposed development in the area.

“They feel that local infrastructure is already under pressure, with many people saying that Dittons Road is heavily congested at peak times and the addition of 650 new houses will tip the problem over the edge.

“Other concerns were the loss of open spaces with many of the development areas proposed on existing green field sites.”

Cllr Freebody says many people in Stone Cross understand the need for more homes but are questioning the need for such a large number in Stone Cross.

He added, “Most of the residents I spoke to agreed that there was a need to build more houses in Wealden, but questioned why most of the large development areas were to the south of the district.

“For example proposed development around Crowborough totals just 300 houses.

“I would urge anyone who hasn’t looked at the proposals to do so by accessing Wealden’s website.”

The consultation on the plans, which can be found by searching for Strategic Sites Development Plan at www.wealden.gov.uk, runs until February 24 at 5pm.

The plans are also available at the district and parish council offices.
