Council tax increase for Seaford residents
SEAFORD residents will face a 2.5 per cent rise in the Lewes District Council proportion of their council tax bill.
The decision was made at a meeting last week and the increase is equivalent to an extra nine pence per week for a Band D property.
Before setting the new level of tax, councillors consulted with representatives of the business community and groups of residents from its citizens' panel.
Council Leader Ann De Vecchi said, "We are going to continue to support the local economy, tourism and employment during challenging financial circumstances.
"To ease the council tax burden we have set ourselves a savings target of 190,000 for the next two financial years.
"Recycling remains a priority for the council and we will be extending glass collections for the remaining properties in Lewes.
"The year ahead will be challenging for the whole community and we will achieve our savings target through efficiency measures."
The council is keen to continue to work to improve the waste management, recycling and street cleansing services within the district as well as planning to reduce CO2 emissions from council offices and buildings this year and beyond.
Service improvements next year will include:
• Completion of the Linklater Pavilion in Lewes which will provide a centre for the study of environmental and climate issues. The Lewes Railway Land Wildlife Trust is delivering this project on Council Land with the Council's backing.
• A further 60 affordable homes to complement the delivery of 54 homes that were achieved this year.
• Continuing the programme of refurbishing Public Conveniences.
The overall council tax figure for an average Band D property in the district for 2010/2011 will be 1,642.84.
Residents' council tax bills are made up of the budget needs of East Sussex County Council, the Sussex Police Authority, East Sussex Fire Authority and their local town or parish council.
The East Sussex County Council portion of the council tax bill will be increased by 2.7 per cent, Sussex Police Authority has agreed to increase its part of the council tax by 2.7 per cent and East Sussex Fire Authority by 2.2 per cent. The average town and parish precept increases by 5.8 per cent.
Homeowners in Seaford learned in January that they faced a 33 per cent rise in the Seaford Town Council proportion of their council tax bill.
