A council worker has been praised by town hall bigwigs after clocking up 25 years of service at the local authority.

Penny Shearer started work with Eastbourne Borough Council two and a half decades ago, back when the links between the council and local business community was described as underdeveloped.

Since then, and largely thanks to the sterling work done by Penny, the relationship has blossomed. In the early days Penny visited all the industrial and commercial companies in the town to find out how the town work and to see how the council could better help local businesses thrive.

Penny then oversaw a significant rise in the number of partnership working between business and town and also was instrumental in the bidding for the government’s Single Regeneration Budget funds which helped create the Towner. Penny was also involved in the development of the first Resident’s Card – recruiting businesses for the scheme.

She is now manager of the council’s Economic Development team which deals with issues raised by a business and is also responsible for the town centre manager and the Eastbourne Business Crime Group, which aims to reduce shop lifting and antisocial behaviour in pubs and shops.

And, as if that was not enough, she also chairs the Overseas Student Advisory Committee which focuses on the safety and enjoyment of the 35,000 language students that come to the town every year.
