Council sets out its spending plan
Councillors holding the purse strings at Eastbourne Borough Council have defended their spending plans for the next year.
Presenting the budget last week, the authority’s Liberal Democrat finance portfolio holder Gill Mattock said the council was managing its budget well despite central government cuts in funding and there would no cuts to front line services locally despite a freeze in council tax bills for residents.
Councillor Mattock said the money the council can spend over the next year amounted to a little over £16 million.
“As always, achieving a balanced budget is a mixture of savings, increase that we have no choice about, income, maintaining or improving current services and developments that we want to bring about,” said Councillor Mattock.
The councillor, who is also deputy leader of the council, said the authority had achieved savings through a new agile working project at the council and further savings through the new joint waste contract.
“We have not only identified the savings required but also planned to grow and develop both our services and the way we deliver them,” said Cllr Mattock.
“All recurring expenditure is being met from ongoing expenses and we are not raiding the savings account, we are investing in the future prosperity of our town. There will be not cuts to frontline services and no rise in council tax.
“The Lib Dem administration continues to manage its resources well and I am proud to bring yet another budget to you that is robust, detailed and fit to meet the challenges of the year ahead.”
