Council pledges action on eyesore rubbish bins
PEOPLE who dump rubbish irresponsibly are to be targeted.
Shopowners and residents are being encouraged to dispose of their waste appropriately after a number of complaints of people overfilling their bins, other people dumping their rubbish in bins that aren't theirs and rubbish not being collected.
One resident in Pevensey Road said, "Standards have dropped for dealing with excess rubbish in Pevensey Road and I am not sure who to point the finger at but it is fast becoming the worst I have seen in 40 years.
"It looks to me as if the council is to blame by not keeping up to date. Last week we spoke to two people at the council and one of them said it wasn't their problem and nothing was done so decaying matter was left for another week.
"There are shop owners who fill up the bins when they should be paying for their rubbish to be taken away, there are multiple occupancies that looks to me as if one bin is for about 20 people.
"There are others that fill up the bins that don't even live in the area, there are drunks from the night clubs who push the bins over, there are seagulls who pull everything out if the lids are left only slightly ajar and there are some people who search the bins for any goodies that they can find."
A spokesperson at Eastbourne Borough Council said, "The finger of blame should be pointed at those individuals or companies who act irresponsibly with their rubbish.
"We also act promptly, along with SITA the council's street cleansing contractor, when dealing with anti-social behaviour issues relating to upturned litter bins and illegally dumped rubbish.
"If any household requires additional bins then they should contact the cleansing department via the town hall on 415229.
"We are also currently discussing alternative storage arrangements for waste in some streets and may be trialling larger wheeled bin containers very shortly."
Councillor Steve Wallis, cabinet spokesperson for the environment, said, "We fight hard to keep our streets clean.
"We look to households and business to dispose of their rubbish responsibly and not just hope the council will clear up after them.
"The SITA cleansing teams are up early to clear any illegally dumped rubbish or vandalised litter bins.
"Fixed penalty notices will be issued when appropriate and we are always looking at ways to improve the cleanliness of the town.
"We simply cannot allow the irresponsible few to spoil the quality of life for the many."
