Concern over objects thrown from bridge onto railway line

CONCERN is growing at objects being thrown onto the railway line from the bridge off Brodrick Road.

Meetings are due to take place between NetworkRail and engineers from East Sussex County Council to address the problems.

The concerns were raised at a recent meeting of the Hampden Park West Neighbourhood Panel Meeting in January by panel members who called for some way of stopping objects being thrown on to the railway line from the bridge.

Sandy Boyce-Sharpe from the panel said, "This is one of the major concerns currently in the west and east panel areas and further meetings are due to take place between ESCC engineers and NetworkRail shortly to address this."

There are also moves underway, together with Neighbourhood Watch, to organise a Rail Watch scheme as there have been reports of pedestrians walking along the line, seemingly totally unaware that they can die.

NetworkRail is undertaking an educational programme regarding safety in the area by visiting local schools and there has been a Level Crossing Awareness Day when road users were offered leaflets and advice on why this busy crossing has to be closed so often, being one of the busiest crossings in western Europe.

The top two items on the priority list for the area are anti social behaviour and provision of youth facilities. A sub-committee is looking into sourcing affordable premises to provide perhaps a drop-in centre but no success was reported to date. An idea put forward for consideration was a youth bus.

The third priority for the area is traffic and parking and it is hoped the Highways Team from ESCC will return to the next meeting to advise the panel of the outcome of the survey undertaken in November and the proposals that have come forth. Southern has in hand a proposal for the provision of 25-30 new commuter parking spaces on land adjacent to the station which should help the congestion.

In addition, an invitation from the panel is to be sent to Aldi to present to the community new proposals for the supermarket site in Hampden Park as soon as it is available.

Police were also able to report at the meeting that crime fell by 50 per cent in December, making Hampden Park a lower crime rated area than the Meads.

Full copies of the notes of the meeting, together with future dates, are available on the website www.eastbournenp.org
