Communities to get new bus services

RESIDENTS on the Lansdowne and Gleneagles estates will benefit from a new community bus service from next month.

The Cuckmere Community Bus (CCB) is extending its H4 route to provide morning services to the estates every Friday, starting on December 4.

The change has been made in response to requests from residents in recent months for additional bus services.

The buses will be run initially on a trial period and an easy access, low floor bus will be used whenever possible.

Adjustments are also being made to the H1 and H3 services from Monday November 30, to improve timekeeping.

Copies of the revised timetable will be included as a supplement in the next edition of the town council's residents' newsletter, which will be distributed to households in Hailsham throughout early November.

CCB founder and organiser Phillip Ayers said, "The Cuckmere Community Bus is delighted by the assistance it has received from the town council over the years and is confident that the improvements to services on route H4 will be much welcomed by the residents of Hailsham and form a more integrated public transport network locally."

Town councillor Nick Ellwood added, "Rural buses such as these can be a lifeline for many people living in Hailsham and the surrounding villages.

"I am delighted that, by making the best use of available resources, the town council is able to underwrite these essential services."

Cuckmere Community Bus, an independent charity run from Berwick by a dedicated network of volunteers, has been operating since 1976, taking villagers to and from their nearest towns.

It has worked closely with Hailsham Town Council and East Sussex County Council over the last four years to develop the Hailsham Town Bus services. The Town Council currently underwrites the bus service.

It is currently seeking volunteer drivers for the services it runs in Hailsham on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings.

If you are over 25 years of age, able to offer your services and would like more information on volunteer training opportunities, contact Philip Ayres on 870920 or 07718 739673.
