College trials new service

SUSSEX Downs College is helping to trial Skills Accounts, a new personalised service that allows learners to access a range of information and careers advice about how to improve their skills and access financial support.

Skills Accounts will help learners take control of their learning and working life.

Sussex Downs College is a strategic partner and one of a handful of colleges in the region working with the Learning and Skills Council to trail Skills Accounts before full national rollout in 2010. A Skills Account will be available to all adults aged 19 and over.

Learners will be able to access careers information and advice so they can understand their options when deciding about their skills and careers, a Skills Voucher indicating their eligibility for public funding for learning which can then be taken to an LSC approved training provider.

Pauline Standen, student services manager at Sussex Downs College said, "We are encouraging our adult students to join this scheme. It will provide them with a personal record that will accompany them as they develop. It also provides a tailored support and guidance package to assist learners.

"Learners will need to create an online Skills Account using a web portal. This will offer a secure online record of learning together with the ability to generate the skills voucher and have access to careers advice."
